Construction Level 1

Full time, one-year programme. On this course you will need to complete multiple units to gain the qualification. This qualification offers an engaging programme for 16 to 19 and also 19+ who wish to follow a vocationally related course to develop a range of employability skills essential for success in working life. This programme provides a variety of diverse and varied units, enabling students to have an introduction to the work of various occupations in the construction industry.

The course is made up of units relating to practical skills, which includes different trades within the construction industry. Theory units are to include Health and Safety and drawing/planning skills relating to the construction industry. Functional Skills or GCSE maths or English will also form part of the programme, and all learners will be required to study at an appropriate level.

You are expected to supplement College work with personal study at home or in the Learning Resource Centre.
In addition to the specialist skills described above, we will help you to develop a range of wider skills that will make you into a well-rounded professional who will be highly valued by employers and universities. During tutorials we will develop your Employability skills, Personal Learning, Social and Community skills, together with your Specialist skills and qualification will give you a distinct advantage when it is time for you to progress to employment or further and higher education.

All internally assessed units will be assessed in a variety of forms, including case studies, assignments, work based simulations, short tests and assignments along with projects and performance observations of a practical nature.

To access this course you will need GCSEs at grade 2 or above in Maths and English, general education and a keen interest in your chosen subject area. In addition, a good school attendance record and report is required. In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process. Please note that entry criteria may vary quite significantly between courses at the same level. This is to take account of the specific skills needed for success on particular courses, the length of the course and the requirements for progression to the next level. Entry criteria are given as a guide, and the exact requirements in order to obtain a place on a particular course will be confirmed following attendance at a Welcome Event/Interview.

On successful completion of the course, you can progress on to the Level 2 Diploma in Property Maintenance or a Level 1 Construction programme, where a deeper understanding of your chosen construction pathway will be continued.
