Course Summary
Applied Science is a practical, career-focused qualification so g ready to put scientific theories into practice as you study biology, chemistry and physics.
The course emphasises coursework and practical investigations alongside exams, making it ideal if you prefer continuous assessment and applied learning. You will learn how science is used in fields such as healthcare, forensics, environmental science and industry, gaining insight into how scientific knowledge underpins modern life.
Course Details
You’ll explore specific areas of science such as scientific developments, bioenergetics, spectroscopy and more. You’ll also strengthen your application of organic and inorganic chemistry, develop practical and experimental techniques, and build up your analytical and research abilities. At the end of this course, you’ll walk away with an AAQ Extended Certificate that’s equivalent to one A level.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
The qualification is made up of 40% examined content and 60% non-examined assessment (NEA) content.
You will study three units each year with one externally assessed exam each year which are available in January and June.
Assessment includes:
One externally assessed exam unit each year and a variety of mandatory and optional units of coursework which are internally assessed and externally moderated.
If you don’t achieve the mark needed for a Pass grade, in an exam you can resit each examined unit twice before you complete your qualification.
All units are delivered with a strong emphasis on practical, hands-on learning and real-world application. This approach supports you to develop both theoretical knowledge and understanding and the skills needed to apply it in a range of contexts, helping you to develop a broad and relevant set of skills and experiences.
Entry requirements
5 GCSE grades 4 and above including a 4 in Science, English, Maths and one other subject.
Your next steps...
Applied Science could take you into a number of different fields in the science industry. You will learn how to follow standard procedures for practical investigations, run scientific reports and carry out health and safety checks. As well as this you will learn important time management skills in meeting deadlines and the importance of cost effective and efficient chemical analysis. We have previously had a student leave to work in a testing/research lab for Specsavers and currently have students wanting to go on to Nursing and RAF work.
