POLITICS

Politics is the art or science of governing – Who should have power in society? What’s the best way to live? Who should decide the Government? If we vote, who is entitled to a vote? Do we all deserve a vote? These are just some of the engaging topics that are a central part of an A-Level in Politics.

Knowledge is power. This course gives you the knowledge to understand how the UK Government works. Whilst we may be critical of some policies, society wouldn’t function without an elected body to decide what taxes are levied, what the policies in education should be and how best to defend our country. Additionally, if you want to work in local or national government, aspire to be an MP or you aim to make a difference to society, this course is a valuable first step.

We also look at the person who is often referred to as the ’leader of the free world’, the President of the United States, as well as seeing how the US Congress and the Supreme Court all share the power in the USA.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Paper 1— Government and politics of the UK

Paper 2— Government and politics of the USA and comparative politics

Paper 3— Political Ideas

The three papers are at the end of the two years. They each last two hours and each make up 33.3% of the A-Level. All three papers contain a choice of medium length ‘explain’ questions, looking at a specific idea or theory, and longer essay style questions.

The assessment objectives include looking using knowledge of politics effectively, writing accurately and building a clear argument and written communication—including key political terminology.
