Course Summary

Are you interested in sport, fitness and understanding what makes the human body perform at its best? Do you want to discover how athletes train, how the body responds to exercise and how science can be used to improve performance?

The BTEC National Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science combines academic study with practical application, giving you the opportunity to explore the science behind sport and physical activity. You will investigate how the body works, how psychological factors influence performance and how scientific principles can be used to develop athletes and improve fitness.

This is a challenging and rewarding qualification for students who want to develop their scientific knowledge, analytical skills and understanding of the sporting world. Equivalent in size to two A Levels, it can form a key part of your sixth form programme and support progression to university and careers in sport, exercise and related fields.

What will I study?

You will explore the relationship between science, exercise and sporting performance, developing knowledge and skills that can be applied to real sporting situations.

Topics include:

• Sport and exercise physiology - investigate how the cardiovascular, respiratory and muscular systems respond to exercise and adapt to training.

• Functional anatomy - understand the structure of the human body, how muscles and bones work together, and how movement is produced.

• Applied sport and exercise psychology - explore motivation, confidence, personality and other psychological factors that influence performance.

• Fitness testing - learn how to assess physical fitness, interpret results and use scientific methods to evaluate an individual's performance.

• Research methods - develop the skills to investigate sporting questions, collect data, analyse findings and draw evidence-based conclusions.

• Coaching for performance and fitness - explore how coaching principles can be used to support development, improve performance and promote effective training.

You will also have opportunities to explore additional areas of sport and exercise science, depending on the units offered as part of the course.

How will I learn?

Learning goes beyond the classroom. You will develop your understanding through a combination of theoretical lessons, practical investigations, scientific testing, research and applied assignments.

You will learn to:

• Apply scientific knowledge to real sporting situations.

• Investigate how training affects the body and sporting performance.

• Collect, interpret and evaluate data from practical investigations.

• Analyse evidence and communicate your findings clearly.

• Develop independent learning, problem solving and research skills.

• Use your knowledge to explain performance and suggest improvements.

The course requires commitment, organisation and a willingness to engage with scientific ideas. You do not simply learn about sport; you investigate the reasons behind performance and use evidence to understand how it can be improved.

How will I be assessed?

The qualification combines internally assessed assignments with externally assessed examinations or tasks. You will be expected to demonstrate your knowledge, apply scientific principles, analyse information and evaluate evidence.

Where can this course take me?

The BTEC National Diploma provides a foundation for further study and progression into a range of sport related pathways.

• University and higher education

• The qualification can support applications for relevant degree courses, subject to individual university entry requirements and the other qualifications you study alongside it. Potential progression routes include:

• Sport and Exercise Science

• Sports Coaching and Performance

• Strength and Conditioning

• Sports Rehabilitation

• Physical Activity and Health

• Other sport and exercise related degrees

Some careers, including physiotherapy, require specific degree routes and professional registration. You should check the entry requirements for your intended career and university course.
