Theatre Arts IB

The aims of IB Theatre are to develop a practical and aesthetic understanding of the many forms of Theatre, across cultures, cultural contexts, and time. It offers individual practical experiences and collaborative participation in a variety of theatre activities, exploring practices and traditions. Its objectives include engagement with theatre actively, imaginatively and analytically, reflecting on personal growth in Theatre, and application of research.

There are four areas of assessed working: two are internally assessed, and two externally assessed.

Internal assessment

1. Independent project portfolio

This will be a portfolio drawn from an individual artistic journal kept during the course leading to an individual practical project, making links between the project and experiences gained from practical and analytical study. HL: 3000 words/SL: 2000 words

2. Theatre performance and production presentation

Making connections between roles undertaken, plays seen and others studied and across other cultures, this is an opportunity for students to explore and present their practical understanding of the workings of Threatre practice. HL: oral presentation, 30 minutes with 7-10 images/SL: 20 minutes, 5-7 images.

External assessment

3. Research investigation

Explore and discover expert practice in an individually chosen theatre tradition, focusing on a practitioner role and a play or performance work. Skills and practitioner knowledge developed during the course will be shown in a 2500-word report (HL)/1500-1750 (SL).

4. Practical performance proposal

A short intensive task to create a design plan for a performance to create dramatic impact. A practical proposal file of ideas for staging; sketches, images and plans, for both HL and SL; HL in addition will submit a supporting commentary of up to 1500 words.

Students are not required to have studied theatre/drama formally but experience is of benefit.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme We require at least seven GCSEs with an average of Grade 6, including English Language and Maths. For subjects you wish to take at higher level you will need at least a grade 6. International Baccalaureate Career Programme We require at least five subjects at GCSE grade 5 or higher, ideally including Mathematics and English and preferably with a grade 5 in your area of specialism. Strong interest in the vocational BTEC subject will need to be in evidence at the guidance meeting.
